Kratom farming on the North Shore of Kauai.

Kava is a plant that is native to the South Pacific islands. It is commonly found in countries such as Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii, as well as other islands in the South Pacific region. Kava has been used for centuries by the indigenous people of these islands for its traditional and cultural significance, as well as its medicinal and recreational properties*.

Kavalactones are a class of organic compounds that are found in the roots of the kava plant (Piper methysticum). They are responsible for the psychoactive effects of kava, which include its calming, relaxing, and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties*.

There are over 18 known kavalactones, with six of them being the most commonly studied and recognized: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin, and desmethoxyyangonin. These kavalactones are believed to be responsible for the physiological effects of kava when consumed*.

Kavalactones are lipophilic compounds, meaning they are soluble in fat or lipid-based substances. They are believed to work by interacting with various neurotransmitter systems in the brain, including the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are involved in the regulation of anxiety, stress, and relaxation*. Kavalactones are thought to enhance the activity of GABA, resulting in the calming and anxiolytic effects associated with kava consumption*.
